Police reported they were notified by a resident who found a car in Hanau covered with reddish substance

Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement say initial examinations show the fluid was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.

An important official stated the incident made him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
